Here’s my first zuisho I was given to style.

There was no angle change or front change (the first pic). It was just a case of cleaning it up, jining the dead back branch and wiring the tree up.

One thing I did is I split the back branch into two levels (as it was long) to replace the missing back branch.

Oyakata’s correction’s.

What Oyakata did is spread the branches more. I thought I had spread them fairly well but, he says that if there is space the pads need to be spread out a lot, as it looks natural. Growth would naturally spread towards areas of space and light in nature. In time as the tree grows these areas will fill out.
The main branch is actually made of two branches which I made into one pad but, Oyakata changed it a bit by making it a pad…

Nihon de Hajimete, Part 11: Pottery and Display Journal Part 2

Picking up where we left off, let’s take a look at
Fujikawa Kouka En
Fujikawa Kouka En has a lot of nice old pots, mostly in larger sizes to suit the larger trees they have at the nursery.

I thought this shallow tray with the design in a different color was pretty cool(and the unglazed landscape pot and cream glazed pot below aren’t too shabby either!)

Yoshoen
I’ve purchased pottery from Mr. Aketo at Yoshoen several times, an have never been disappointed. They have a more modern(or perhaps Western) type of store than many nurseries, where pottery is often out of doors under the benches, waiting to be sifted through.

Nihon de Hajimete, Part 7: Shunkaen and Akiyama San

Add your thoughts here… (optional)

Next up we visited Akiyama San, followed by Shunkaen and Kobayashi San. Both were great visits! Akiyama San was Peter’s Sempai at Shunkaen, so trips to both nurseries were comfortable and relaxed. I’m sure many of you got to meet and work with Akiyama San at his during his visit to the Mid Atlantic earlier this year.
